On May 25, Partner Mary Jane Weaver will speak on the latest mine fields and developments in PERM labor certification law at the NorCal Chapter of the American Immigration Lawyer’s Association’s New Member Division’s training event.  Mary Jane previously authored “Recruitment Under PERM: Lessons Learned (So Far)” in the American Immigration Lawyers Association’s David Stanton Labor Certification Manual.

WSM applauds the outreach work of our Associates Lisa Baker and Stephanie Smith and Partner Kirsten Schlenger. 

Northern California Citizenship Day. Our senior associate Lisa Baker played a leadership role in organizing San Francisco’s recent Citizenship Day in April sponsored by the American Immigration Lawyers Association (“AILA”), and our associate Stephanie Smith worked hard as a volunteer attorney alongside Lisa all day at the event.   Through Lisa’s and Stephanie’s tenacious efforts to address immigration legal issues and the likewise work of attorney and other volunteers, the group assisted nearly 100 lower income applicants in their quest for U.S. citizenship.  The pro bono event received favorable coverage by several local news stations.  Organizers have been lauded for their successful community outreach efforts.

USCIS Developments: San Francisco Stakeholders Meeting

WSM attorneys Kirsten Schlenger and Stephanie Smith participated in the San Francisco Stakeholders meeting with USCIS Director Alejandro Mayorkas on April 14.  They were encouraged by his commitment to serving immigrants as well as his understanding of the issues and challenges facing his agency, and finally by his willingness to receive feedback from and listen to the community.  Ms. Schlenger questioned how his understanding would translate quickly into changes and improvements in the adjudicating officer field and offered suggestions for areas needing improvement.  It was a very constructive meeting which we hope will lead to results shortly.  
 
Mary Jane Weaver and Kirsten Schlenger Attended International Boutique Law Firm Annual Conference

Mary Jane Weaver and Kirsten Schlenger met with other members of boutique law firms from around the globe at the 6th Annual Meeting of The International Network of Boutique Law Firms (INBLF), an organization with over 300 member firms worldwide. This invitation-only organization is comprised of law firms that focus on a particular area of law and attorneys who have risen to the top of their respective legal disciplines. The meeting was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 23 - 25.

Partner Laura J. Mazel and Associate Attorney Lisa I. Baker spoke at the 2009 American Immigration Lawyers Association California Chapters Conference in Marina Del Rey on November 12-14.  Laura’s presentation covered issues related to the Department of Labor’s PERM Labor Certification process, focusing on current strategies and pitfalls for the employer-sponsored PERM in the context of Reductions in Force and supervised recruitment.  Lisa reviewed legal challenges and creative alternatives for the long-pending Adjustment of Status applicant.
