Our attorneys have developed substantial expertise in representing a broad spectrum of clients who seek the protection of asylum in the United States. Our asylum cases have involved individuals who suffered arrest, detention and torture at the hands of their own government before they fled to the United States. Other cases involved those who feared physical or mental harm or suffering at the hands of those whom their government could not or would not control. Some of our clients sought asylum because they held political opinions that were not in agreement with those of the ruling party in their country. Others came seeking the freedom to practice a religion that was not permitted in their home country. We have represented women who fear harm for refusing to comply with fundamentalist mandates in their home countries, and individuals who are HIV positive and fear severe attacks in their countries of nationality. Our clients include citizens of many nations around the world, including such countries as China, Malaysia, Laos, India, Tibet, Venezuela, El Salvador, Democratic Republic of Congo, Somalia, Ethiopia, Eritrea, Nigeria, Palestine, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Romania and Bulgaria.
We assist clients in preparing and filing a comprehensive and detailed application, statement and supporting documentation*. We advise on what will happen during the asylum interview or court hearing. At the interview or immigration court hearing, an attorney from our office represents the person who is seeking asylum and his/her family members who are included in the principal application. Upon approval of the asylum application, we assist the client in obtaining an employment authorization document and in petitioning for close family members who remain overseas if we are retained to do so.
After a year, for an individual who was granted asylum, we prepare and file an application for permanent residence, provided that our office has been retained for this service.
If asylum is not granted at the first or second step of the asylum process, we are generally available to assist the client during the succeeding steps in accordance with the terms of a new retainer agreement for each step in the process.
We take great pride in successfully representing asylum seekers through one or many steps in the path to permanent residence, and eventually United States citizenship. By helping someone who fears returning to his or her home country, we seek to provide the peace of mind that comes with lawful status and a safe future in the United States. |
