U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) Assistant Secretary, John Morton, announced today that it has served audit notices, or “Notices of Inspections” (NOIs), to 1,000 businesses this week. This announcement serves to alert business owners that their hiring records, including I-9 Form, are subject to audit to ensure the compliance of employment eligibility verification laws.

The State Department’s December 2009 Visa Bulletin, published on November 10, 2009, shows no movement in visa availability, with the paltry exception of the third preference (EB-3) category for Indian nationals, which advanced 7 days to make visas available for May 1, 2001 priority dates. Visa availability remains the same for nationals of all other countries in the EB-3 category. In the EB-3 category, Chinese nationals with priority dates of June 1, 2002 and before, Mexican nationals with priority dates of June 1, 2002 and before and Filipino nationals with priority dates of June 1, 2002 and before, have visa numbers available to them. Nationals of all other countries in the EB-3 category must have priority dates of June 1, 2002 or before for visa availability.

Mary Jane Weaver and Kirsten Schlenger met with other members of boutique law firms from around the globe at the 6th Annual Meeting of The International Network of Boutique Law Firms (INBLF), an organization with over 300 member firms worldwide. This invitation-only organization is comprised of law firms that focus on a particular area of law and attorneys who have risen to the top of their respective legal disciplines. The meeting was held in Colorado Springs, Colorado on October 23 - 25.

When you are in love and on the verge of marriage, everything seems possible, the world is yours—or so you think. As the song says, “Love and Marriage” go together.  Add cross border love and U.S. immigration to the mix and love and marriage may get mixed up with headache, heartache, anxiety, separation, and confusion.   The reality is that U.S. immigration is not very accommodating to the practicalities of global love, and not helpful to those eager to begin their lives together.  Below is a brief listing of some of the myths and realities that apply in U.S. marriage based immigration.
